Texas Southern University and C1 Build Cybersecurity Lab to Prepare Students for the Workforce

Texas Southern University (TSU) is one of the largest universities in Houston, offering over 120 academic programs across nine schools and colleges. With a focus on innovation, opportunity, and community impact, TSU prepares students to become leaders in their chosen fields. In partnership with C1, TSU recently launched a state-of-the-art Cybersecurity Lab designed to provide students with hands-on, real-world training. This initiative combines technical instruction, mentorship, and internships with industry experts, positioning TSU as a leader in workforce readiness and setting a model for how higher education can directly meet the growing demand for cybersecurity professionals.

"What excites us about this program is that it goes far beyond theory. With C1’s partnership, our students are learning on the same equipment and workflows they’ll see on day one in the workforce."

The Challenge:

From banking to cybersecurity: Expanding TSU’s workforce-readiness model

For years, Texas Southern University’s Jesse H. Jones School of Business has successfully prepared students for careers in the banking industry through its renowned Future Bankers Leadership Program (FBLP). By partnering with financial institutions, TSU created a pipeline that blended classroom learning with professional training and internships. Students graduated not only with academic credentials but also with practical experience and industry connections, giving them a competitive edge in the job market.

Recognizing the growing demand for cybersecurity professionals, TSU sought to replicate this model in a new, high-growth industry. “Our banking program showed us the power of combining academics with practical, workforce-focused training,” said Dr. Claudius Claiborne, Acting Dean of the Business School. “We knew we could take the same approach in cybersecurity, where the demand for talent is exploding.”

However, unlike banking, cybersecurity required access to specialized labs, enterprise-grade equipment, and certifications that align with industry standards. TSU needed a partner with both the technical expertise and resources to build this infrastructure while also helping students gain mentorship, experience, and pathways into the workforce. That’s where C1 stepped in.

The Solution:

Hands-on learning through TSU’s cybersecurity lab and C1’s internship program

C1 partnered with TSU to design and launch a cutting-edge Cybersecurity Lab equipped with Cisco networking gear, firewalls, and advanced cybersecurity tools. The lab serves as a hub for hands-on learning, where students work side by side with C1 engineers during real installations of network equipment and gain practical experience in managing and securing IT environments.

Students participate in paid internships that allow them to shadow professionals, apply their classroom learning in real-world contexts, and earn industry-recognized certifications.

“What excites us about this program is that it goes far beyond theory,” said Dr. Claiborne. “With C1’s partnership, our students are learning on the same equipment and workflows they’ll see on day one in the workforce.”

C1’s role extended beyond equipment deployment. The company helped develop elements of the curriculum, ensured the lab was accessible and scalable, and provided mentorship to students as they honed both technical and soft skills. This holistic approach gives students a critical advantage in preparing for careers in cybersecurity.

The Result:

Equipping students with workforce-ready skills and opportunities

The Cybersecurity Lab has already had a significant impact at TSU. Students are graduating with not only a degree but also practical, resume-ready experience, certifications, and industry connections. “Every time I meet with these students, I’m impressed by how well-prepared and confident they are,” said Dr. Claiborne.

The initiative has also spurred institutional change. TSU launched a dedicated Cybersecurity degree program in its Business School to build on the success of the lab. Interest from other historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) suggests the program could serve as a model for expansion nationwide.

Students benefit directly from the structure of the program: they are paid through internships, supported by mentorship, and exposed to enterprise-grade tools. This holistic approach allows them to focus on skill-building without worrying about financial barriers. “Our students are not just completing coursework—they’re leaving here with certifications and hands-on knowledge that makes them competitive from day one,” added Dr. Claiborne.

By leveraging a proven model and adapting it to cybersecurity with C1’s expertise, TSU is extending its reputation for innovation in workforce readiness while addressing one of the fastest-growing needs in the global economy.
